Making the Switch to Clean Beauty

Did you know that your skin is your largest organ? Or that 60-90% of the ingredients you put onto it are absorbed into your bloodstream? The average woman absorbs 130 chemicals into her bloodstream every single day. Often unbeknown to us, these toxins actually wreak havoc on the body and are linked to problems such as hormonal dysfunction, skin conditions and liver function.

In the same way that you may make a conscious choice to nourish your body with natural food for your health and happiness, it is also important to nourish your skin with good quality ingredients. I choose ingredients that are natural, organic, ethical and cruelty free. And for me, this is a form of self love.

Choosing to use natural products that are not tested on animals is also a compassionate choice. Why do companies need to test new chemical ingredients on animals when there are perfectly safe and effective ingredients available in nature that need not be tested on animals in inhumane ways? This is why I always choose products that are vegan and cruelty free.

Natural ingredients are also much better for the planet as they do not produce toxic wastes and harmful residues. But be careful of greenwashing! The use of words such as ‘organic’, ‘natural’ and ‘eco’ are not regulated. So ensure these words are backed up with certifications. It is also important to consider the product packaging. Are they recyclable? Biodegradable? Non-toxic?

Whether you choose to wear makeup or not is a personal choice. And regardless of this choice, you are beautiful. Beauty comes from within. For me, makeup has always been a creative outlet that makes me feel confident and happy. I’m pretty minimal and don’t always wear it, but I enjoy it when I do. When I made the switch to a plant-based lifestyle, I started to question everything I was putting into my body and on my skin. Thankfully there are some wonderful brands (and awesome DIY recipes) out there so I was able to make mindful swaps. Conscious beauty is a way to describe that choice.

If you’re unsure of where to start, I encourage you to do your research. But to keep it simple I like to live by the motto: If you wouldn’t put it in your mouth, don’t put it on your skin.
