Travel Guide: Canggu, Bali

Canggu is a chilled out coastal village in Bali with superb surf spots; markets and boutique stores; fitness and yoga studios; an abundance of trendy plant based cafes; and the most magnificent sunsets you’ve ever seen. Its relaxed, youthful and wholesome vibes reminded me of my favourite coastal town in Australia, Byron Bay. But don’t be fooled, Canggu certainly knows how to party with a different venue hosting a party every night!

There’s so many ways to enjoy a great holiday in Canggu. Here are some of the activities I enjoyed during my stay.

Surfing at Batu Beach or Echo Beach

Batu Beach is a great place for beginners to hire a board or sign up for a surfing class. It’s also a great way to meet other travellers. Echo Beach is recommended for surfers who have more experience.

Watching the sunset from Old Man’s

Old Man’s is an iconic gathering place right on the beach which plays live music as the sun sets a vibrant pink over the ocean. In fact, it seems like most of Canggu gathers at Old Man’s or in front of it on the sand to do just that. My jaw dropped every time. I just could not get over how vibrant the sunsets were.

Shopping & Markets

Love anchor Bazaar

This undercover market area crams in a whole bunch of clothes, jewellery, homewares and various other knick-knacks. It is well worth visiting. I certainly scored some great bargains and souvenirs for my friends and family back home.

Canggu has an array of beautiful stores selling everything from fashion to homewares. I hope you leave room in your suitcase! Some of my favourite stores were:

  • COVE Island Essentials
  • Bungalow Living Bali
  • Lulu Yasmine
  • Yoli & Otis
  • Frockk
  • Indigo Luna

Eating at all the trendy healthy cafes

I’ve dedicated an entire blog post to my top foodie finds in Canggu, which you can read here. Here is a summarised list of my favourite cafes and some sneaky photo previews:

  • Peloton Supershop
  • Shady Shack
  • GIVE Cafe
  • Cafe Organic
  • The Loft
  • Crate Cafe

Fitness & Yoga

Canggu is a haven for fitness fanatics and yogis. Though I managed to attend a fun contemporary class at the Canggu Studio, a subsequent motorbike accident prevented me from trying out any of the other amazing classes and studios that Canggu has to offer. But I recommend putting the following studios on your radar:

  • The Canggu Studio
  • Canggu Nest
  • Serenity Yoga
  • Bali Climbing: Climbing and bouldering Gym
  • S2S Cross Fit

There’s a party held every night at a different venue where most of Canggu goes. There are also stunning beach clubs. Walking through Echo Beach Club felt like walking into a dream.
