The Benefits of Dry Skin Brushing

After hearing the term “dry skin brushing” being thrown around in the health community, I decided it was time to do some research to find out what it was all about. I was surprised by how many benefits the practice provides, the key benefit being that it helps to eliminate toxins from your body through your skin. So I promptly invested in my own bristle brush made of bamboo fibres. This is a great material considering it can naturally break down and therefore does not harm our beautiful planet.

Dry skin brushing is now a regular part of my routine. I try to do it every day; that is, when I remember. It is most effective when done on clean skin just before exercise as exercise stimulates the skin, blood and lymphatic system.

  1. It exfoliates dead skin cells. Brushing your skin with a dry brush removes dead skin cells and allows new ones to re-generate, leaving your skin soft and smooth.
  2. It stimulates the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system – which filters out bacteria, viruses and toxic waste – must be manually pumped through the body’s movement (such as through exercise, dry skin brushing and massage).
  3. It allows your skin to breathe by unclogging pores.Β Brushing unclogs your skin’s pores and therefore enables it to absorb more nutrients.
  4. It can remove cellulite.Β Dry skin brushing helps to break down trapped toxins in the body’s fat cells, known as cellulite, and eliminate them.

  1. Start at your feet, brushing in upwards motions towards your heart. Work your way across all areas of your body. Finish with three short strokes on your chest towards your heart.
  2. Have a shower to wash away the dead skin cells.
  3. Dry your skin with a towel and rehydrate with a natural oil. I love using coconut oil!

Let me know what benefits you notice after beginning this practice!
